The Engine - Supreme level of propulsion
The Bugatti EB 16·4 Veyron is powered by a 16-cylinder 1001-horsepower W16 quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter mid-engine located ahead of the rear axle. The light-weight alloy engine has roller rockers and variable valve timing via four overhead chain-driven camshafts. Variable valve timing makes the engine capable of developing an extremely harmonious torque curve. At least 85 percent of the maximum torque is available at an engine speed of 1500 rpm.
Despite its large number of cylinders, this Volkswagen-developed engine is extremely compact. The engine, with a length of 643 millimetres and a width of 690 millimetres, is compact with high displacement and performance, and incredible engine rigidity. The key to the compact size is the design of the engine which comprises two banks of eight cylinders, each based on the VR principle, which are inclined towards each other at an angle of 72 degrees to form a W. In addition to its compact size, the two banks of eight cylinders layout makes the engine extremely smooth.
The 16-cylinder engine has a displacement of 8.0 litres. Each combustion chamber has four valves: A total of 64 valves control the exchange of gases in the combustion chambers. The engine, which has direct fuel injection, develops 463 kW / 630 bhp at 6000 rpm. The 16-cylinder engine has a monumental maximum torque, reaching its peak of 760 Newtonmeters at an engine speed of 4000 rpm.
Power is transmitted directly through a hydraulically activated clutch to the manual gearbox. The rear axle final drive housing is an integrated component of the engine, and is housed in the engine sump. The 16-cylinder engine has dry sump lubrication with a capacity of 15 litres.
The engine is maintained at the ideal operating temperature by a high-performance water cooling circuit with two three-stage water pumps. Electronic engine management is affected by a master-slave system comprising two independent eight-cylinder systems. A primary control unit coordinates the two systems.
